Arthur Vernon Petty, JrMay 2, 1947 - February 8, 2023 Arthur V. Petty, Jr. died peacefully at home on February 8, 2023. Art was born inAtlanta, GA on May 2, 1947 to Anne Bennett and Arthur Vernon Petty, Sr. He was anonly child. At age 12 he was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. He grew up in Cuthbert,GA where he attended Randolph County High School. He received both a bachelorsand a masters degree in Ceramic Engineering from Georgia Tech.Art married Theresa (Reeves) Gabel on August 14, 1987 in Brookings, SD. He retired in2009 and they moved to Oro Valley, Arizona in 2010.Art worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Tuscaloosa, AL and in Albany, OR. Hisresearch was instrumental to several patents. When the Bureau of Mines wasdefunded, his position was transferred to the U.S. Department of Energy.Art loved exploring new places, hiking, camping, backpacking, genealogy, JimmyBuffet music and grilling great food for famiy and friends. He was active with theCoalition for Sonoran Desert Protection through their wildlife camera projects.Art is survived by his wife, Theresa; a son, Roderick, Tuscaloosa, AL; daughters, DinaHorton, Toccoa, GA and Heather (Phil) Regnault, Atlanta, GA; stepson Gerald Gabel(Katie), Whetstone, AZ and seven grandchildren. Preceeding him in death were hisparents.A Celebration of LIfe will be held in May.
