Col. Lynn J. Zerull (Ret.) Obituary (1948 - 2008)

On September 7, 2008 the Zurell family lost a father and a husband and his beloved country lost a dedicated servant and patriot. Born the son of a Navy man, Lynn aspired to also serve his country as did his father who was a veteran of both World War II and Korea. A kind and fun-loving man with a keen intellect for order and detail as well as the ability to lead and inspire others, Lynn began his training by attending North Dakota State University where he eventually graduated in 1970, and was commissioned into the Air Force two days later. While attending the University he caught the eye of a pretty young coed named Marilyn Lund, to whom he eventually became engaged. Because Lynn was set to serve in Vietnam, the young couple put off marriage until his return due to concerns about his safety. Lynn served as an air controller at the Nakhon Phanom Airbase in Thailand across the river from North Vietnam. His responsibilities, for which he proved instantly adept, included coordinating overflights for bombing runs, patrols, and mid air refueling. At the conclusion of his service, he returned home and married his college sweetheart. Like many military families, Lynn's service led him to many stations and locations. Over the course of his career he served in Florida, Washington, Houston, Oklahoma, and several locations in Germany. During his military career, Lynn earned the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, along with several other commendations. He retired from the Air Force in 1998 as a Colonel. Despite his illustrious and highly successful military career, Lynn held his family as his most cherished accomplishment. When first asked to assume a position as an Air Force Commander in the Philippines, an often once-in-a-career opportunity, he turned the command down as he would not be able to take his wife and children with him. A second opportunity was offered in Iceland, but he again turned down the appointment because of a lack of accommodation for his family. Almost miraculously he was offered a third opportunity in Germany, and after verifying that his children would be educated nearby, he accepted, winning praise and awards for his leadership of the 609 TCS in Bad Munder, Germany. After his retirement, Lynn did his best to keep his highly meticulous and active mind engaged. After spending time as a car salesman and financial planner, Lynn turned his attention to helping his wife's fledgling political career. His support included single-handedly placing Marilyn's signs and passing out literature. Lynn and his wife received news of her victory in the primary election the day before his passing. Lynn is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marilyn and his sons, Matthew Peter and Eric David. His mother Eula Faye Zurell resides in West Fargo, North Dakota.
