A Life built with family, heavy equipment and hot rods.
Eddie Galloway, born November 30, 1942, in McCaysville, Georgia, wrapped up his final project on Earth on November 13, 2025. He left us with the same determination he brought to every job, every engine, and every family gathering. Eddie passed at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy built on hard work, horsepower, and heart.
Eddie graduated from San Manuel High School in 1961 after a short stay in Globe/Miami, Az once the Galloway family relocated to Arizona to Georgia in the late 1950’s due to his father Ed’s career in Copper Mining and Norma's Dr recommendation to live in a drier climate due asthma.
Once out of high school, Eddie held some small jobs as he contemplated his future such as Gordon’s Market in Oracle and Lockheed Aircraft in Georgia.
Early in 1964, Eddie enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Medical Assistant and served his country with compassion and pride until July 1968. Stationed at Lackland AFB, Walker AFB and Beale AFB during his enlistment. Eddie often tended to US Military Service men from Vietnam who were wounded in battle as well as Vietnamese civilians sent the USA for medical care. While on leave, he would often drive his 1957 Chevy Belair back to Oracle to see his parents and friends.
From 1968 to 1971, this was where his passion for the Chevrolet Corvette was born. Having two in this span (1st one was wrecked at San Manuel Airport) and the other was sold to make way for a more family friendly vehicle.
In Mid to Late 1970 while in Catalina, Az, he met his first wife, Vicky Denton who had a young son James (Jimmy) Lee Powell and by late 1971 the couple were married and a new baby Teri Jo Galloway was born on Feb 28th, 1972 in Tucson, Az.
It was during this time that Eddie began a career change and entered Local #428 Operating Engineers Apprenticeship Program. After obtaining Journeyman status, he went to work at Ashton Contracting in Tucson, Az.
In 1975, Eddie moved the family to Apache Jct, Az where they resided until the late 1980’s.
November 15th, 1979, Michael Edward Riggs Galloway was born at Desert Samaritan in Mesa, Az.
Over the course of the next 35 years, Eddie spent a bulk of the career with MM Sundt, Pulice, Mardian and Ball & Ball and Brosamer on some of the largest projects in Arizona history. These projects included the CAP canal, Superstition Freeway (US60), I-10 (Tonopah), I-40 (Williams and Holbrook), Sky Harbor Airport and Morenci Mine Reclamation. The last major project he was apart of was the I-10 Deck Park Tunnel with MM Sundt, before heading off to California (Local 12) when Arizona became a “right to work” state and MM Sundt became Sundt Corp.
In the Heavy Highway/Mass Excavation world, Eddie had evolved into arguably the best Push-Cat/Skinner Operators around. This was an area of pride with him as it became an orchestra on yellow iron and high production!
Fast forward to 1990, the oldest son Jimmy broke in under Eddie at F-N-F on the 202 Red Mountain Freeway on a 631 Scraper to begin his career as a heavy equipment operator.
The youngest son, Michael Galloway also followed in Eddie’s footsteps in 1998 operating heavy equipment and held a supervisory role the last several years in North Dakota with Baranko Brothers. Eddie finished out his career with Borderland in Tucson, Az and retired after 17 years with them in 2006.
Slightly bored with retirement and wanting to spend some time with Mikey, and maybe to prove he still had it. At 80, Eddie came out of retirement for one last summer in North Dakota. This time working under the watchful eye of his son Mikey and alongside his grandson Matthew. He claimed he was “just helping out,” but somehow ended up running the show — and the machinery — like he never left.
After his 2nd retirement, Eddie was back to building cars and trucks from the ground up. His pride and joy was yet another 1964 Corvette and his 1956 Nomad as well as a Chopped 1937 Ford Slant back Sedan. He loved building and fabrication on his cars almost as much as he loved his family — almost.
Eddie was the kind of man who could fix anything, sarcasm was spoken fluently and make you laugh without trying. He taught us that hard work is its own reward, that family comes first, and that life’s better with a little grease under your nails.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents Ed Galloway (1987) and Norma Galloway (1996) the kids mom Vicky Denton (2023) married from 1971 to 1989. His 2nd wife of 23 years, Shelia Jo Asma Galloway (2016).
He leaves behind a family and friends who adored him, a garage full of stories, and a world made better by his steady hands and generous heart.
Left to carry on the memories and unforgettable stories are his two sisters, Nancy Dillard and Sandy Brown (Mike); his sons, James “Jimmy” Powell and Michael Galloway; daughter, Teri Galloway; step-son, Jason Jones; and step-daughter, Jodi Kaiser. He was a proud grandfather to Shelby and Savana Lance, Matthew and Leah Galloway, Harrison Powell, Morgan Jones, and Alexis Arriola; and a great-grandfather to two — with a third on the way. He also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews, each of whom he adored equally and wholeheartedly.
