James Edwin Mitchell passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2017, with his wife and children by his side. He was 68 years old. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Karen Pitstick Mitchell; his children Ben (JoLynn) Mitchell and Rebecca (Brian) Field; his grandchildren Hailey, Ryan, Hannah, Rosetta, and Sylvia; and his brothers Bill, Larry and Randy Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents Marion and Rita Mitchell and his granddaughter Emma. Jim was a kindhearted man with a big laugh and a gentle voice. He loved a crass joke, a hearty hug, and a good glass of scotch. Jim was a graduate of Seneca High School and Illinois State University, and a veteran of the US Army. He worked as a farmer in Marseilles, IL until retirement brought him to Oro Valley, AZ. Jim spent his recent years marveling at the beauty of the Sonoran desert, soaking up time with his family, and reflecting on a life well lived. Jim was a cancer survivor, overcoming the odds after a heroic battle. Although he was able to beat cancer, his more recent diagnosis of ALS is what eventually took his life. Despite the multiple health issues he faced throughout his life, Jim's motto was always "I'm the luckiest." He was truly grateful for every day he had, and for what he perceived to be the extraordinarily good fortune he had in life. His enduring spirit will live on in those who knew him. No services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the ALS Association of Southern Arizona or Casa de la Luz Hospice.
