Jo Carolyn Greenmyer Obituary (1948 - 2022)

Jo Carolyn Greenmyer was born in Oklahoma and raised in Arizona. Jo pursued a career in the Air Force. After graduating from Arizona State University she was selected for Officer Training School at Lackland Air force Base. Jo then completed a nine month course qualifying her as an intelligence officer. She was then assigned to a base on the Upper Mekong River on the Thai-Loatian border where she served for a year with Special Operation forces. On return from South East Asia, Jo served in a succession of assignments at Strategic Air Command Headquarters as a squadron commander at Grand Forks AFB, and as an intelligence analyst at Anderson AFB, Guam. She then moved to Headquarters Tactical Air Command at Langley AFB before being assigned to the Pentagon where she served on the Air Staff. It was at this assignment she met her future husband, Rick Viau. Jo and Rick were reassigned to Colorado where they served on the staff of the North American Aerospace Defense Command as senior intelligence directors in the Cheyenne Mountain Indications and Warning Center. Jo later moved to the new Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs. After twenty years, Jo and rick retired and returned to Arizona. Jo was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Air Force Meritorious Service Medals, and two Air force Commendation Medals for her service duties. Her Vietnam Service Medal bears three battle stars along side the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. she holds the rank of Major. In addition to being a graduate of Arizona State University, she also held a Master of Public Administration degree from George Washington University. Jo was an avid runner, completing the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC, a three-time runner of the Pikes Peak Marathon, and the Southern Arizona Mule Mountain Marathon. On retirement, Jo worked at the Biosphere II and later at Miraval Resort where she enjoyed taking visitors on desert hikes. Jo was a loving wife who served her country with honor.
