John was born in Lawrence, MA and graduated from Ithaca College in 1950, receiving a B.S. and M.S. degree. He was Director of Athletics and Physical Education in Rye, NY from 1962-1982. He spent 32 years teaching and coaching, retiring in 1982 and moving to Tucson in 1989. Special recognitions from John's coaching career include: - 1973 Westchester County Football Coach of the Year Award by Westchester/Rockland Counties Newpapers (Nominated 9 times). - 1975 NY Daily News awarded him All Star Coach of the Year. He also coached the Rye Golf Team that was Traditional Champions of Conference 20 years. - 1981 Distinguished American Award from Westchester Chapter of National Football Foundation. - 1982 High School Stadium named for John J. Nugent - 1994 Westchester Sports Hall of Fame - 1999 Inducted in Ithaca College Hall of Fame (brother Tom Nugent Former Florida State and Maryland University Football Coach, also in IC Hall of Fame. They are the only brothers in the Hall of Fame) John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean; children: Susan Wolf, Eileen (Patrick) Finnegan, Mickey Nugent and Patrick (Michelle) Nugent; grandchildren: James Wolf, Kimberly (Bryan) Luisana, Bryan Wolf, Kevin (Sarah) Finnegan, Daniel Finnegan and Gabryella, Rodee, Ysabella and Jayden Nugent; great grandchildren: John and Mason Luisana. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am Friday July 5, 2013 at Vistoso Funeral Home, 2285 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd, Oro Valley.
