Kathryn Cooney

Kay Cooney 95, of Oro Valley passed away on Thursday January 31 at her home.
She is survived by her son Mark and preceded in death by her parents; Frank and Harriet Himelick and her brothers Alan and Robert Himelick.

A Celebration of Life memorial event will be held at Splendido, 13500 N Rancho Vistoso Blvd, Oro Valley AZ on Saturday February 23 at 10am. Time updated as of Friday 2/15/19

Originally from Indiana, she settled in Ohio for high school. After graduating from Ohio State University with a B.S in Education in 1949. She married Charles Cooney and relocated to Houston, Texas to raise a family.
At Ohio State University she pledged Delta Gamma sorority and remained an active alumni for life achieving her 75th year member recognition in 2018. She served as president of Delta Gamma alumnae in both San Antonio and Houston.
After divorce she started a career serving as Administrator for the Houston downtown Kiwanis club until her retirement in 1993 when she relocated to Sun City Tucson. In 2006 she sold her house and became a happy pioneer of the Splendido community where she spent her remaining years.
In Tucson Kay joined the Assistance League where for many years volunteered every week at their Thrift store primarily sorting and tagging donated items. This was always a source of interesting tales for her to share.
In 1998 she began spending her summers at her beautiful condominium on the north shore of Lake Tahoe near Tahoe City. In between she found time to travel with friends.

Kay was a proud WW2 veteran having served in the U.S. Navy as a Wave from October 1943 to March 1946
