In Loving Memory of Mary Kay McNichols (née Hedderman)
April 5, 1958 – April 12, 2025
Mary Kay was born on April 5, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, to Irish immigrants Richard and Catherine Hedderman, who came to America from the small village of Rahona on the Loop Head peninsula in County Clare, Ireland. This special place, where the River Shannon meets the Atlantic Ocean, held a special place in Mary’s heart. She treasured every visit to Loop Head and deeply valued the time spent with her many beloved relatives there.
Though she held her Irish heritage close, Mary had an abiding love for the city of Chicago, the place she proudly called home for most of her life. Raised on the South Side with her brother Michael, she grew up in a loving household, working at the local neighborhood drugstore and graduating from Maria High School in 1976. Even as a young woman, Mary was known for her sharp mind, hardworking spirit, vibrant personality, and deep care for others - qualities that defined her throughout her life.
MK built a successful career in the insurance industry as an underwriter and broker, rising through the ranks with perseverance, intelligence, and heart. She developed lasting friendships through her work and was admired for her incredible work ethic, generosity, and a remarkable ability to connect people and uplift those around her. Her colleagues and dear friends at Ceres were like extended family, and she took great pride in her work and the relationships she nurtured.
It was through work that she met the love of her life, David McNichols. They were married in 1979 and began their journey together eventually settling in Naperville, where they raised their two children, Monica and Timothy (TJ). Mary devoted herself fully to her role as a wife and mother, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, love, and adventure. Her family was her greatest joy, and that joy only grew with the arrival of her four grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure.
Mary Kay will be remembered for her boundless kindness and generosity. She had a remarkable gift for hospitality hosting legendary gatherings with abundant food, drink, laughter, and love. No one ever left her home hungry or without feeling cared for. Whether you were a lifelong friend or a first-time guest, Mary made everyone feel like family. Her humor, radiant smile, and compassionate heart lit up every room she entered.
A devout Catholic, Mary drew strength from her faith, praying daily for her loved ones and trusting deeply in God’s plan. Her spiritual devotion was a quiet yet powerful foundation in her life.
Mary Kay was truly a special person to all who knew her. Her absence leaves a deep void, but her spirit and the love she shared will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.
Mary Kay is survived by:
Her beloved husband, David McNichols
Her loving children, Monica and Timothy (TJ)
Her cherished children-in-law, Chris and Megan
Her treasured grandchildren, Stella, Leo, Penelope, and Theodore
Her dear brother, Michael Hedderman
And more friends than can be counted, all of whom felt the warmth of her love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to your local food pantry, in honor of Mary Kay’s deep compassion and her desire that no one ever go hungry.
