Paul L. Everest passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026 in Tucson, Az where he lived with his surviving wife, Diane Nicol, since 2020.
Paul was born on June 2, 1938 in Tupper Lake, NY where he obtained all his education at Holy Ghost Academy and graduated in 1956. This is the same school his mother, her sisters and brothers attended in the 1920s. He fondly remembered being named president of his junior class the same year he was named to the first string All North Country Catholic basketball team in the state of New York. He proudly wore the number 9 on his jersey, and it continued to be his favorite number all his life. He was grateful for the coaching he received in high school sports by Bill McGinn and the patience and dedication instilled in him by the Holy Ghost nuns. In his many visits to Tupper Lake, he would always say, "I should have never left here." He was always proud of where he came from.
After graduation, Paul worked for two months at Tahawus Mines. In August 1956 he joined the United States Marine Corps where he continued his love of sports by playing basketball and baseball until he retired. Paul received numerous decorations while in the Marine Corps, ending his 30-year, active-duty, career in the Marine Corps as Master Gunnery Sargent and the position of Legal Services Chief of the Marine Corps. In 1986, following his retirement from the military, he commenced a 23-year civil service career for the United States Government. He retired in 2010 after 53 years of service to his country. In his many years of work, Paul always said, "I never worked a day in my life"- he loved his work experiences with the United States Government.
Paul loved sports and passed on his passion for the NFL and college basketball to his daughters. He loved MLB, the PGA and in recent years NASCAR. If he wasn't participating or watching sports, he was playing bingo (B9), pinnacle or enjoying time with his family and friends. His love for music ranged from classical to rock 'n roll and he passed that passion on to his daughter, Karen.
Paul is predeceased by his parents, Cecile D. Everest and Emerson Everest and many aunts, uncles and extended family from the Adirondak area of New York. His is also predeceased by Martha D. Everest, the mother of his children. He is survived by his sisters, Nancy LaBarge of Tupper Lake, NY and Anne Farina of Oregon and their families. He is also survived by his daughters, Karen T. Everest of Malvern, PA and Emilè E. Cumpston of Manteo, NC.
A funeral mass will take place at Santa Catalina Catholic Church in Tucson, AZ. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
